Why We Chose Coco Coir for Fanless Waterless Toilets
Share
When using a fanless waterless toilet, the choice of cover material makes a significant difference in both comfort and long-term performance. Over the years, we tested a wide range of bulking materials including hemp, sawdust, peat, and other organic alternatives. After extensive real-world testing, coco coir proved to be the best overall solution for fanless toilets such as Separett Weekend Prime and Separett Uno.
What Is Coco Coir?
Coco coir is a natural material made from coconut husk fibers. It is widely used in gardening and composting because of its absorbency, stable structure, and ability to retain balanced moisture levels. For use in waterless toilets, coco coir offers several advantages that make it especially suitable for systems without a ventilation fan.
Our coco coir is OMRI Listed and made from 100% natural coconut fiber without additives or chemicals.

Why Cover Material Matters in Fanless Toilets
In a fanless toilet, the cover material plays a larger role than in ventilated systems. Without continuous airflow, the material itself helps manage moisture, odors, and the overall composting environment inside the solids container.
A good cover material should:
- Absorb excess moisture
- Help reduce odors naturally
- Create a dry surface after use
- Support long-term composting
- Deter insects
- Remain easy to handle and store
During testing, many traditional materials worked reasonably well in some areas but created problems in others.
Why We Chose Coco Coir Over Other Materials
Better Moisture Balance
Coco coir has excellent absorbency while still maintaining an airy structure. This helps dry out solid waste more effectively without compacting too tightly.
Compared to sawdust or peat, coco coir creates a more stable and balanced environment inside the container, especially during daily use.
Improved Odor Control
In toilets without a fan, moisture buildup often leads to stronger odors. Coco coir helps trap moisture and creates a dry top layer after each use, significantly improving comfort and reducing smells naturally.
Supports Healthy Composting
Long-term composting depends on the right balance between carbon, moisture, and airflow. Coco coir adds valuable carbon and structure to the composting material while decomposing evenly over time.
Some materials compact too heavily and restrict airflow, but coco coir maintains a loose structure that supports the composting process more effectively.
Helps Deter Insects
Adding a layer of coco coir after each use creates a physical barrier on top of the waste. This helps reduce exposure and makes the environment less attractive to insects.
Cleaner and More Consistent
Compared to sawdust, coco coir produces less fine dust and fewer airborne particles. It also has a more consistent texture and moisture behavior, making it easier to use regularly.

Designed Specifically for Waterless Toilets
Not all coco coir products are equally suitable for toilet use. We selected a coco coir with an optimal consistency for waterless toilets:
- Expands quickly when hydrated
- Easy to separate into loose fibers
- Absorbs moisture efficiently
- Does not compact excessively
- Breaks down evenly during composting
Each compressed brick expands to approximately 2.5 gallons when hydrated with water, making storage and transportation easy while still providing a large usable volume.
How to Use Coco Coir in a Fanless Toilet
Before First Use
Add approximately 2 cups of expanded coco coir into the solids container or compostable liner bag.
After Each Use
Add 1–2 cups of expanded coco coir directly onto the solid waste to create a dry surface layer.
For a household of two people using the toilet daily, one brick typically lasts a little over one week.

Important Usage Notes
Do Not Use in the Urine Bowl
Coco coir should only be added to the solids container. Adding it to the urine bowl may clog urine pipes or restrict flow.
Not Recommended for Fan-Equipped Toilets
In toilets equipped with a ventilation fan, dry coco coir fibers may be drawn into the fan over time and potentially damage the fan or bearings.
Easy to Store and Prepare
Each brick is compact and easy to store before use. To prepare:
- Place the brick in a container
- Add approximately 11 cups of water
- Let it absorb for about 10 minutes
- Break apart the material into loose fibers
The result is a light, absorbent material ready for use in your toilet.

A Natural Choice for Off-Grid Living
For cabins, tiny homes, RVs, and off-grid living, fanless waterless toilets offer a simple and reliable sanitation solution without electricity or plumbing requirements. Choosing the right cover material is an important part of keeping the system comfortable and easy to maintain.
After years of testing different options, coco coir has become our preferred solution because it offers the best overall balance of:
- Odor control
- Moisture management
- Composting performance
- Ease of use
- Storage efficiency
- Natural sustainability
For fanless waterless toilets, coco coir simply works better.
